Etobicoke General’s Emergency Department a “top performer”

Although Etobicoke General Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) was designed to serve 30,000 patients a year, it currently sees more than double that number.

In March 2015, 90 per cent of ED patients were seen by an ED physician within 2.5 hours of being triaged. Today, they are seen within an hour.

How did they do it? The ED team used an electronic dashboard to track the time it took before each patient was assessed by a physician. They also redesigned the flow of patients in the ambulatory treatment area of the ED; introduced ED Physician Navigators to increase efficiency; initiated a Physician-in-Triage shift when physicians treat and discharge patients in triage; and collaborated with one another every step of the way.

Etobicoke General ED is now a top-performing ED in Ontario and winner of a Central West Local Health Integration Network 2017 Quality Award. But the most important achievement of all is the tremendous increase in patient satisfaction.

Congratulations to the multi-disciplinary teams who are truly coming together in the ED to provide patient-inspired health care without boundaries!
